Profile

About Me:
I am a micro-philanthropy consultant and the founder of Social Actions.

Social Actions helps individuals and organizations use social media to plan, implement, and support peer-to-peer social change campaigns so that grassroots solutions to local and global problems can flourish.

I have presented webinars for the Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN) on the subject of person-to-person fundraising, wired fundraising, and micro-philanthropy. I have also written and published articles on Personal Democracy Forum, TechSoup, NetSquared, and NTEN about starting social actions and selecting the right combination of technology platforms.

The underlying assumption of my work is that person-to-person social actions are an excellent incubator for broad social change.

I travel frequently but maintain my home base and office in Montreal, Quebec.

Hi Peter, thanks for your note. Dave Peery told me about your site and it looks fantastic. I'm at cbalme@sparkprogram.org, let's set up a time to talk and discuss any possible connections in our work!

Thank you, Peter! I have really enjoyed your blogs from the Philanthropy Conference in DC. Thank you for sharing from the discussions and panels. It's exciting to see how technology is empowering more people to take action and build personal networks across the globe.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment about healthcare in our country--healthcare that is the most expensive with the poorest outcome in the world and that leaves millions without adequate and affordable care. Brieflly, the problem is a lack of regulation of utilization of services. There is a financial incentive for all health care providers to provide more and more service whether or not that service is medically necessary.

Billions of dollars can be saved by denying reimbursement for medically unnecessary procedures and diagnostics, and for medically unnecessary ancillary services. A start would be to deny reimbursement for self-referrals by physicians to entities in which they have a financial interest: laboratories, imaging centers, hospitals, day-surgery units, home nursing companies.

Repairing or curing the deficiencies requires bold measures that I am not sure will occur unless the public demands some action and unless the lobbyists for the AMA and the health insurance industry are neutralized.

One last comment that I am sure will stir contraversial comments: I am a firm believer that universal health care is a right of every resident in the country. It is feasible if the healthcare dollars are allocated appropriately.

Hi Peter,

A real pleasure to be in contact. LOVE your site. I was fortunate enough to meet Melissa from bringlight when I was in San Fran last month, thanks to you. I also caught up with Kiva whilst in town.

I am a huge fan of social entrepreneurship, microfinance, microphilanthropy and web enablement. A firm believer of the possibilities for change through word-of-mouth. I'm optimistic that we may yet reach the UN Millenium development goals if over the next few years we can bring together skilled passionate people. I sense you'll be a key part of this action as an evangelist. Kudos for taking action.

Thanks, Peter. I have just recently begun to see the links between the areas I am most interested in - what you might call "micro-governance" or thickening democracy, as part of peacebuilding and reconstruction in international development - and the technology of "micro-philanthropy". I like to think of Hopebuilding as creating a sort of "marketplace" of good ideas (in the sense Harrison Owen uses marketplace in Open Space) and a community of people who can connect with one another through the stories told in Hopebuilding.

Here is one interesting snippet from a new report, in case you haven't seen it:

“If one characteristic jumps out from our sample of social intrapreneurs, it is that —while they see part of their role as warning their colleagues about impending challenges and clearing impediments to the progress of the business — their ambition is to change the landscape of thought and practice, both internally and (eventually) externally. “Social intrapreneurs create the prophecies that allow companies to make new business offerings. At the same time, they are re-envisioning the terms in which corporations engage society,” as Luis Sota put it.” From The Social Intrapraneur: A Field Guide for Corporate Changemakers, published by SustainAbility in partnership with Allianz, IDEO, and the Skoll Foundation.

Peter. Thanks for the shoutout.

Spot.us won't bring up anything for another 2-3 weeks - but then I hope it becomes a micro-funding site for investigative journalism. Looking for as much advice as possible - hence.... I'm here.

Hallo, Peter! Thanks, and I'm afraid that I have been very inactive with our group here, but I hang on thinking I'll catch up at any minute!

Art Head is up and down due to the chaotic nature of my personal life in the last nine months. But current status is: all software (drupal, CiviCRM, CiviContribute) is being updated and the site should be operational by the end of June. I have a board meeting this Saturday to start talking strategy! Oh, and it will be launched in the Bay Area - not the Twin Cities.

Whew.
